SCS Building Policy

Posting Policy

  1. SCOPE

This policy applies to posting areas within SCS buildings as it relates to use by its community of students, faculty, staff. This policy also applies to non-SCS personnel with the intent to post within SCS buildings.

  1. POSTING AREAS

For the purposes of this policy, the terms “sign” and “signs” shall include, but are not limited to, billboards, decals, notices, table tents, flyers, placards, posters, banners, and hand-held signs. “Posting” shall refer to any means used to display one or more signs. The terms “posting area” and “posting areas” shall include, but are not limited to, designated spaces throughout the buildings (as indicated in this policy) on specific surfaces such as billboards, corkboards, and select wall spaces. There are specific audiences for which select posting areas are intended, as described in building-specific guidance below. Policy establishes areas within Gates Hillman Centers for SCS-related postings. Non-SCS persons who wish to post organizational, personal or other messages in Gates Hillman, Newell Simon and Smith Halls must adhere to this policy.

III. POSTING POLICY FOR SCS PERSONS WITHIN GATES HILLMAN CENTERS

  1. All marked posting areas in Gates Hillman Center can be used for notices about talks, internships, seminars, new course offerings and any other activity or event that pertains to SCS education and research.
  2. There are a few areas (noted in section IV below) where we welcome general postings about other things on and off campus, including those of a personal nature.
  3. We do not welcome postings on the acoustic panels between offices other than those put there by the occupants of the offices immediately adjacent to those surfaces.  Even then, the postings should only pertain to their professional activities.
  4. The locations of posting areas on each floor of the Gates Hillman Centers are:
  1. 9th floor: (2) next to Gates elevators and to the right of 9211.
  2. 8th floor: (2) next to Gates elevators and to the right of 8211.
  3. 7th floor: (3) next to Gates elevators, to the right of 7211, and to the left of 7029.
  4. 6th floor: (5) next to Gates elevators, to the right of 6211, to the right of 6009, to the left of 6401, and to the right of 6701.
  5. 5th floor: (1) north end of Gates/Hillman connector (adjacent to atrium).
  6. 4th floor: (2) to the left of Stair 4 entrance, and at the Gates end of Gates-NSH Bridge. (Open for all postings.)
  7. 3rd floor: (1) on north side of curved wall facing exterior entrance in café area. (Open for all postings.)
  1. Postings can be attached with push pins, thumbtacks or transparent adhesive tape. Postings attached with staples or any non-transparent adhesive tape will be removed immediately.
  2. Postings attached to any tack or acoustic panel with staples will be removed.
  3. Persons placing signs or messages on any of the public posting areas listed above are expected to remove them after those messages are outdated or otherwise invalid.

IV. POSTING POLICY FOR NON-SCS PERSONS WITHIN SCS BUILDINGS

  1. Non-SCS personnel may post signs or messages pertaining to issues, events, clubs, programs, lectures and other items of general interest to the CMU community as well as personal messages pertaining to places for rent, items for sale, etc.
  2. Signs or messages of a commercial nature or those considered to be in bad taste will be removed immediately.
  3. Public posting surfaces made of cork, vinyl or fabric can be found at the following locations:
  1. Gates Hillman Centers: North end of third floor café; next to Stair #4 entrance on 4200 corridor; and at Gates end of the pedestrian bridge to Newell Simon.
  2. Newell Simon Hall: Across from the elevators on floors 1, 2, 3 and 4 and Level A.
  3. Smith Hall: Inside main entrance on first floor.
  4. Wean Hall: West side of the central elevators core.
  1. Non-SCS personnel may not post signs or messages on private posting surfaces or on walls, doors or surfaces other than the listed public posting surfaces in these three SCS buildings and the bridges and tunnels connecting them will be removed immediately.
  2. Postings can be attached with push pins, thumbtacks or transparent adhesive tape. Postings attached with staples or any non-transparent adhesive tape will be removed immediately.
  3. Persons placing signs or messages on any of the public posting areas listed above are expected to remove them after those messages are outdated or otherwise invalid.
